Travel Tips

Getting to Nairobi

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO)

The main international gateway to Kenya, located about 15 km from downtown Nairobi. Serviced by major international airlines with direct flights from Europe, Middle East, Asia, and other African countries.

Airport Transfers

We recommend pre-arranging airport transfers through your hotel or using official airport taxis. Ride-sharing apps like Uber and Bolt are also available and reliable.

Getting Around Nairobi

Ride-Sharing & Taxis

Uber, Bolt, and Little Cab are widely available and affordable. Official taxis are also reliable but negotiate the fare before starting your journey.

Public Transportation

Matatus (minibuses) are the main form of public transport but can be confusing for visitors. We recommend using ride-sharing apps or taxis for convenience and safety.

Conference Shuttle

Africa PR Week will provide complimentary shuttle services between partner hotels and the conference venue. Schedule will be provided closer to the event date.

Practical Information

Currency

The Kenyan Shilling (KES) is the local currency. Major credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and larger shops. ATMs are readily available in Nairobi. It's advisable to carry some cash for small purchases and tipping.

Communication

Purchase a local SIM card upon arrival for affordable data and calls. Major providers include Safaricom, Airtel, and Telkom. You'll need your passport for registration. Most hotels and the conference venue will offer free Wi-Fi.

Internet Access

Wi-Fi is widely available in hotels, restaurants, and cafes in Nairobi. The conference venue will have high-speed internet access for all attendees. Mobile data is affordable and reliable in urban areas.

Safety Tips

Nairobi is generally safe for visitors, but standard precautions apply. Keep valuables secure, use hotel safes, avoid displaying expensive items, and use reliable transportation, especially at night. The conference area and major tourist spots are well-monitored.

Time Zone

Kenya operates on East Africa Time (EAT), which is UTC+3. There is no daylight saving time adjustment.

Language

English and Swahili are the official languages of Kenya. English is widely spoken in business settings, hotels, and tourist areas. Learning a few basic Swahili phrases can enhance your experience and is appreciated by locals.
